UGC-NET losing charm among students Ph 078-380-239-56

ALLAHABAD: After witnessing a surge in the total number of applicants in the past, UGC-NET is suddenly facing a low turnout in the forthcoming examination to be held on December 29.

As compared to the exam held in December 2012 which had a total of 28,824 candidates, the number has fallen by around 2,500 candidates this year.

The National Educational Testing Bureau of UGC conducts NET twice every year, in June and in December, to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of junior research fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research.

However, this time Hindi has come out to be the most preferred subject, with History coming in at second and Education on third spot.

Majority of candidates chose Hindi, amounting to 4,680 aspirants, whereas for the December 2012 exam, 4,461 had opted for it.

The biggest fall of candidates has been registered in those opting for History subject, which had 5,995 candidates in December 2012 exam as against to 4,524 aspirants this year. Education has, however, managed to attract more candidates.

In December 2012, it had witnessed 2,809 candidates whereas 3,045 candidates chose the subject this year.

If one compares the number of applicants with the June 2013 exam, the number has risen as around 25,811 had registered for the exam as compared to 26,300 for the December exam. This time applications for a total of 55 subjects have been received at the Allahabad centre that also includes one candidate of 'Bodo' subject also.

For the December 29, 2013 exam, a total of 39 centres have been finalised and their details have already been uploaded on the Allahabad University (AU) website
